Oracle Solicitors Celebrates LGBT+ History Month 2023
Have you got a question?
LGBT+ History Month takes place annually from the 1st to the 28th of February, and it is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans, and non-binary (LGBT+) community.
This month is also an opportunity to recognize the contributions made by the LGBT+ community towards civil rights and related movements.
The theme for the 2023 LGBT+ History Month is ‘Behind the Lens.’ This theme is aimed at celebrating LGBT+ people who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to produce films and cinema. It is an opportunity to recognize the roles of various individuals, including directors, producers, cinematographers, and support staff.
LGBT+ History Month was initiated in February 2005 by Schools Out UK, an LGBT+ Education charity. The month was launched to coincide with the abolition of Section 28, a law that prohibited the teaching of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship. Section 28 was partly inspired by a storybook published in 1983 called ‘Jenny Lives with Eric and Martin,’ which aimed to give children information about different types of family relationships.
LGBT+ History Month exists to raise awareness of the LGBT+ community’s history and promote equality. Sue Sanders, the co-founder of LGBT+ history month, emphasized that we need this month because there is a profound ignorance that has been deliberately imposed on the LGBT+ community.
LGBT+ History Month started with 150 to 200 events held across the UK, exceeding the expectation of 15 to 20 events that were initially planned. The co-chairs of Schools Out UK, Sue Sanders, and Paul Patrick, organized the event to educate young people about the issues faced by the LGBT+ community and promote inclusivity in schools.
Pride Month, which takes place in June, differs from LGBT+ History Month. It is a month-long celebration of LGBT+ acceptance and pride, and it usually features outdoor events such as parades. Pride Month also serves as a platform to advocate for legal rights, such as marriage equality.
At Oracle Solicitors, we understand the importance of diversity and inclusivity. We believe that everyone deserves equal rights, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. As we celebrate LGBT+ History Month, we urge everyone to continue educating themselves on the history of the LGBT+ community and promoting equality in all areas of life.
